Clothes and Handicrafts : Patterns and Designs

Sarawakians have their own cultural costumes and are known to be good in arts and crafts.

The pictures shows the traditional Iban costume for women called the ngepan iban.

 Labung Bungai Nuing is used for protection. Older generation would usually encourage their family members to carry it in their bags or put it in their cars for protection against danger.

Tikai bemban is a handmade bamboo mat, which takes about 6 months to weave, and few more months to add color to it. The mats are usually designed according to nature and in this picture, shapes of birds are used.

The picture shows selampai used to cover the upper half of the women body when wearing the traditional costume.

Pua kumbu, pua means blanket, was used by headhunters to carry the head of the enemies before the British banned headhunting among tribes.
